1. Introduction

Duplicate Point of Interest (POI) listings occur when two points on a map refer to the same entity. Duplicate POI listings are confusing to users and make Maps applications frustrating to use. This document explains how to identify duplicate POI listings, as well as how to define relationships between non-duplicate POIs, including Brand and Physical Containment relationships (POIs within POIs).

This Introduction to POI Duplicates Evaluation defines several key concepts used to rate POI pairs and outlines the evaluation process.

1.1. POIs

The term POI refers very generally to any entity that would normally be covered in a yellow pages directory, and is anything other than a residential listing. POIs are places that users would want to find on a map and potentially navigate to.

Examples of POIs include, but are not limited to:

POI CategoriesExamples
Conventional for-profit businessesRestaurants, hotels, day care centers, law firms, company headquarters
Non-profit organizationsSchools, churches, museums, foundations
Government officesOffices and departments at all levels of government; however, restricted access administration offices are not valid
Housing complexesIncluding apartment complexes; however, individual apartments are not valid
LandmarksPublic monuments, bridges, squares
Transit stations and airportsMetro/subway stations, railway stations, bus stops
Parking lotsIncluding public and paid lots; however, restricted access parking lots are not valid
Public restroomsPublic restrooms located in parks and public spaces, departments stores and malls; however, restricted access restrooms are not valid
Seasonal POIsIncluding ski resorts, Christmas tree farms, pumpkin patches, haunted houses, etc.
Farmers marketsMarkets with regular, recurring dates
Areas of Interest (AOIs)Parks, beaches, lakes, mountains
Chain POIsChain businesses have more than one location, and include everything from national chains, like Starbucks, Target, Auchan, Albert Heijn, and Boots down to small local chains.
POIs Within POIsBusinesses within malls or airports or other POIs. This may include departments or specific buildings within a university.

1.2. Duplication and Containment

Users expect each POI on a map to represent a unique entity. If a pair of POIs refer to the same entity, then the POIs are Duplicates. On the other hand, if a pair of POIs represent unique entities, they will be categorized by whether or not they have a Containment relationship. In this evaluation, POIs will be rated according to the following relationships:

  1. Duplication – Both listings refer to the same POI entity.
  2. Containment (brand or physical) A POI may be contained under another POI’s brand or physically contained within another POI.
    1. Brand Containment occurs when the POI listings are linked by a common brand identity and there is a hierarchical parent-child relationship between the POIs.
    1. Physical Containment occurs when a smaller POI is located under the same rooftop of a larger POI and the POIs share an entry access point.
  3. No Duplicates and No Containment –Both listings refer to unique entities with different locations.

1.3. Rating Interface

Your ratings and comments will be collected in a rating interface, similar to the one pictured below. This set of guidelines will explain the different parts of the rating interface and cover all POI Duplicates questions.

The Rating Interface is divided roughly into two halves. In the left half, you will find the Map View. On the right, you will find the POI Results and Rating Questions. Original Results are listed in the left column (A) of the POI results and Potential Duplicates are in the right column (B).

Rating Questions are located on each of the POI Result Cards in the Original Results column. For each Original Result, you will answer one question about duplicate/containment relationships. If your answer confirms a duplicate or containment relationship, you will then indicate which POI is the duplicate/containment POI. At the bottom of the survey is a Comments field.

1.3.1. Map View

The Map View is located on the left side of the Rating Tool.

A Map Layer Selector, located at the top left corner of the Map View, allows you to select between Standard, Hybrid and Satellite map layers.

Note: The Map View will default to Standard View for each task.

In addition to the Map Selector and Pin displays, the Map View has several more tools that will help you to find coordinates at a selected location on the map, measure the distance between two points, zoom in and out of the map, and measure the relative distances of elements on the Map.

Tool IconName and Description
Select the Pin Drop Tool and then click on the map to drop a pin. Once the pin has been placed, a flag will open that lists the pin’s Address and Coordinates (latitude and longitude). Select ‘Delete Pin’ from the pin flag to toggle it off.
Select the Measure Tool and then click on two points on the Map. Once two points have been selected, a dashed line will be drawn between those points and the measurement, determined in meters, will appear next to the Measure Tool icon. Select the Measure Tool again to toggle it off.
The Map Location Tools include a Go To Lat Long feature. To navigate to a specific location on the map, enter the latitude and longitude coordinates in the text field and click on the Go To Lat Long button. The map will maintain the current zoom level and will center the provided lat/lng location in the map view.
The Map Location Tools also include a Show All feature. To center the Map View and display all Pins, click on the Show All button. The map zoom level will adjust, if necessary, to allow all pins to be displayed in the map view. A Pin indicates a POI’s location, based on the POI’s coordinates. Note: The head of the pin is only an indicator. The tip marks the POI’s actual location.

1.3.2. POI Result Cards and Listing Information

For each POI, you will be provided with information on a POI Result Card that will help you to determine whether a POI is a duplicate of, or has a containment relationship with, another POI. This information is called the POI’s Listing Information and is what a user sees on a POI’s card, when interacting with the POI on the map. The information that is displayed may vary in type and formatting from POI to POI, but generally will include the following, when available:

  • Name – A POI name is generally a name that a specific business uses to refer to itself. These names can be listed in a variety of ways in different sections of the entity’s official website or official social media website(s).
  • Address – Every POI listing should have an address associated with it, so that users can navigate to the POI.

Address information will vary among POI types and address conventions may vary by locale.

  • URL – Whenever available, the business’s official URL will be displayed – A web page owned and maintained by the business/government/POI is considered the official URL
  • Phone – Whenever available, the business’s phone number will be displayed.
  • Location – The location of the POI will be provided in latitude/longitude coordinates.

Using POI Result Cards to Locate POIs in the Map View

To automatically highlight a specific pin, click on the header of the POI Result Card for the POI that you want to locate.

The map view will center on the corresponding POI and a pop-up card with the POI’s listing information will replace the POI’s pin.

1.3.3. Duplicates Evaluation Pins

In Duplicates Evaluation, you will see three types types of Pins:

How to Separate Clustered Pins

To see the individual locations of clustered POIs, use one of the following methods:

  • Zoom into the map – at closer zoom levels, clustered POIs will separate into individual pins
  • Click on the clustered pin – the map will increase the map zoom level and relocate to display all of the separate pins

If the POI pins are located very close together, including results that share the same coordinates, you may find it difficult to see individual locations. If Clustered Pins do not separate using the methods above, try the following:

  • Click on the POI card headers in the POI results, this will highlight individual POIs on the map • Change web browser

1.3.4. Rating Questions

Duplicates Evaluation asks three questions:

  1. POI Duplication – Is there a Duplicate or Containment Relationship?: This question considers whether or not a POI candidate is a duplicate of another POI from a list of potential duplicates. You will answer this question for all for each Original Listing POI. You will use the POI Listing Information displayed on each of the POI Result Cards and the POI location information in the Map View to answer each question.
  • Duplicate/Containment Identification – Result has a Duplicate or Containment Relationship with…: For any Original Listings that has a duplicate or containment relationship, a second question will appear. You will specify the respective duplicate or containment POI from a drop-down menu of Potential Duplicates.
In this example, there are two Original Listings in Column A and two Potential Duplicates in Column B. The second Original Listing (A2) has the same name, phone number, and location as the first Potential Duplicate (B1), so the answer to the first question is Duplicates, and then B1. Mayesh Wholesale Florist, is selected from the drop-down menu for the second question.
  • Comments: Please leave comments anytime there is an issue with the POI listings. Comments should include the websites used for research and any information useful for future reviewers.

1.3.5. Research Expectations

Duplicates Evaluation may require online research to fully determine the relationship between the Original Listings (A) and Potential Duplicates (B).

Here are some rules to keep in mind when conducting duplicates research.

  • Use a trusted search engine to locate official resources
  • Use official web pages, whenever possible
  • Use other official resources, including social media pages, street imagery, postal authorities, whenever necessary
  • When official resources are not available, use other reliable resources, including newspaper sites or crowdsourced user review sites
  • Use local knowledge, when relevant, to understand POI relationships

1.3.4.1. Official Websites

If a POI has an official website, and its official website is actively maintained, it may be used as a resource to understand a POI’s relationship to other POIs. A web page owned and maintained by the POI usually has a distinct address, corporate design, and logo, and will typically be customized with information regarding the POI, such as contact information, history or general background about the POI, as well as the services or products that the POI offers.

1.3.4.2. Official Resources

Additional official resources may provide information that is not available on an official web page. Such resources may include:

  • Social media sites claimed by the business/POI and updated within the last 6 months
  • Street imagery (using the most recent available online imagery showing streets and buildings)
  • Postal authorities (for postal codes and locality names)
  • Official government maps (land registry/cadaster, GIS maps)
  • Government business registries

1.3.4.3. Reliable Resources

If no official resources can be found, rate according to consensus from multiple reliable sources. Reliable resources include:

  • Articles in primary publications (newspapers or similar publications that do their own reporting)
  • Crowdsourced user review sites

Some resources, like data aggregators, spammy/unofficial directory sources, etc., are unreliable, and consensus between unreliable resources should be disregarded.

1.3.4.4. Online Research Exceptions

Some categories of POI may require research using sources that are not the official company website or official company social media pages:

  1. EV Chargers: To verify POI information and location, use PlugShare or Alternative Fuels Data Center (United States-specific) as online resources as well as street imagery.
  2. Bike Share POIs: Use street imagery resources, where available.
  3. Bus stops: Bus and transit stops may not be obvious, based on name of the POI alone. Often bus and transit stops may be named after a road, intersection or nearby place name. When a POI name is ambiguous, always check the location and review available street imagery, which may reveal the type of POI, as well as its relationship to other nearby POIs.

Example: The POI ‘2138 Shopiere Rd’ looks like a street address instead of a POI. However, reviewing the POI location in street imagery reveals that this is the name of a bus stop.

1.3.5. Localization

The localization of POI listings (for example, English results in a non-English speaking country) is not evaluated. If there are localization inconsistencies, please do not demote ratings, but note these in the Comments field.

2. Duplicates Evaluation

For each POI pair, the relationship between the Original Listing and a Potential Duplicate Listing will be evaluated to determine if there is a Duplicate or Containment relationship. This chapter outlines the rating criteria, further defines key concepts introduced above, and includes a number of examples to help illustrate the rating process.

2.1. Rating Options

Each Original Listing POI will be evaluated and rated according to the following relationships:

Rating OptionExplanation
DuplicatesDuplicates should be selected in instances where an Original Listing and Potential Duplicate both refer to the same entity.
A Contains BA Contains B should be selected when an Original Listing (A) contains a Potential Duplicate (B).
B Contains AB Contains A should be selected when a Potential Duplicate (B) contains an Original Listing (A).
No Duplicates and No ContainmentNo Duplicates and No Containment should be selected in cases where the listings clearly refer to distinct POIs and the POIs do not have a containment relationship.
Can’t VerifyRate Can’t Verify when there is not enough information to confirm a duplicate or containment relationship.

Duplicate relationships are always prioritized over containment relationships.

If the POI listings are considered duplicates, there is no need to verify whether or not one listing is contained within the other listing

If the POI listings are considered duplicates, there is no need to verify whether or not one listing is contained within the other listing.

2.1.1. Missing Potential Duplicates

If no POI listings are displayed in the Potential Duplicates list, you will see a message in the Rating Tool: This side returned no results. When there are no Potential Duplicates to consider, rate each of the Original Listings as No Duplicates and No Containment.

2.1.2. Duplicate/Containment Relationships with Multiple Potential Duplicates

If one of the Original Listings has a duplicate and/or containment relationship with more than one of the Potential Duplicates, base your ratings on the first Potential Duplicate that has a duplicate or containment relationship with the Original Listing.

For example, The Rice Apartments (Original Listing, A4) has a relationship with three of the Potential Duplicates (B4Duplicates, B5Duplicates, and B6A Contains B, based on a physical containment relationship).

A (Original Listings)                                                                   (Potential Duplicates) B

Since ratings are based on the first Potential Duplicate that the Original Listing has a relationship with, The Rice Apartments (A4) should be rated Duplicates based on the relationship with B4. The Rice.

2.2. Duplication

When the listing information for both the Original Listing (A) and Potential Duplicate Listing (B) is the same, or very similar, they might refer to the same entity. Duplicate POI pairs occur when both POIs refer to the same entity, are at the same location and have the same business focus. Carefully compare the POI’s listing information to determine if the listings refer to the same entity.

Although the locations are the same, the business name and URLs are different, indicating that the listings are for different companies.  The listings should be treated as though the POIs were separate entities, where one listing closed and the other listing took its place.

2.3. Containment

Containment POI pairs (POIs within POIs) occur when the POIs are not duplicates but still share a brand name and/or location. Containment POIs will usually have unique phone numbers and serve distinct purposes. There are two general types of containment:

  • Brand Containment: Two POIs have a direct parent-child relationship under a common brand. • Physical Containment: One POI is located physically within another POI under the same rooftop.

Examples of containment POI pairs include, but are not limited to:

  • A convenience store belonging to a gas station (brand containment)
  • An architecture department of a university (brand containment)
  • A restaurant inside a shopping mall (physical containment)

Always determine if there is a Brand Containment relationship before a Physical Containment relationship. If a Brand Containment relationship can be established, there is no need to determine a Physical Containment relationship.

Single or multiple rooftop POIs may also contain individual POIs within them: POIs Within POIs. This occurs when there is a parent-child relationship between two POIs and one of the POIs (Child POI) is physically located within the other (Parent POI), such as an individual shop (Child POI) within a mall (Parent POI).

This table matches types of Parent POIs with the Child POIs that they frequently contain:

POI TypeExample of Parent POIExamples of Child POIs
HealthcareHospitals, Clinics, Medical CentersHospitals have many departments and subdepartments such as cardiology, oncology, family practice, etc. Hospitals also have doctors, labs and similar health care related services. Thus hospitals can contain medical departments, doctors and labs, etc.
FinanceBanks, Financial Centers, Credit UnionsBanks contain departments for loan, mortgage, and personal finance. Banks may also contain amenities, such as ATMs.
EducationUniversities, Public/ Private SchoolsUniversities have colleges and research departments.
ShoppingMalls, Outlet Malls, Department StoresMalls or department stores can contain other retail stores, restaurants, cafes, and amenities such as ATMs and restrooms. All of these are unique sub-offerings contained within a mall or department store POI.
RestaurantsRestaurants, DinersRestaurants can contain bars, bakeries, café’s, small shops, and amenities such as restrooms and ATMs.

AmenitiesN/AParking, ATMs, restrooms, EV chargers, etc. are amenities associated with a parent POI and are usually contained by another POI.

2.3.1. Brand Containment

When one POI belongs to another POI under a common business or brand identity, the two POIs are related through Brand Containment. For Brand Containment to occur, there must be a parent-child relationship between the two POIs. This means that both POIs must be connected by the same brand as well as having a parent-child hierarchical relationship.

Original Listing (A)Potential Duplicate (B)Rating and Explanation
Albertsons 3710 State Line Ave Texarkana, AR 71854 +18707743146 http:// www.albertsons.comAlbertsons Pharmacy 3710 State Line Ave Texarkana, AR 71854 +18707743146 http:// www.albertsons.comA Contains B
The address and URL are the same, but the names are different, suggesting a difference in the level and type of service. In this pair the parent POI, Albertsons grocery, contains the Pharmacy under the Albertsons brand.

Brand Containment may apply to POIs that share a single building or to POIs that are part of a multiple rooftop POI (such as a shopping center, university or amusement park; See Sec. 2.3.3). If a POI brand is unfamiliar, be sure to conduct research to obtain a better understanding of how the brand represents itself. There are some cases where the same type of POI is under a brand that has a different focus than the other POIs in the same category. An example of this is a country club resort that hosts a golf course as well as a hotel. Some country clubs focus on the hotel aspect of the POI, while other country clubs focus on the golf course aspect. Depending on the specific POI, the hotel may be considered contained within the golf course or the golf course may be considered contained within the hotel grounds.

The POI listings do not point to the same POI, so they are not duplicates. The brand of the gas station determines the containment relationship because the brand, Valero, is known primarily as a gas station brand. The convenience store, however, is a sub-offering of the gas station.
7-11 Gas Station 2101 Highway 114 Service Road, Trophy Club, TX 76262 +181749090767-11 2101 Highway 114 Service Road, Trophy Club, TX 76262 +18174909076B Contains A
The difference in names indicates that these POIs offer different types of service, so they are not duplicates. The 7-11 brand is typically associated with convenience stores, so the gas station POI belongs to the convenience store POI.
Exxon 1100 W Parmer Lane Austin, TX 78727 +181749090767-11 1100 W Parmer Lane Austin, TX 78727 +18174909076No Duplicates and No Containment
Unlike the example above, these POIs share a location, but they represent different companies and provide different services. The POIs also do not contain one another, so they should be treated as separate entities.
University of Pennsylvania – Wharton School of Business 1 College Hall Philadelphia, PA 19104University of Pennsylvania 1 College Hall Philadelphia, PA 19104B Contains A
The original listing is for the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business and the potential duplicate is the university itself. However, the business school provides an individual function, distinct from the university as a whole. The two listings are not duplicates because Wharton is a standalone POI that offers a different function than the larger university. The Wharton School of Business is also contained under the University of Pennsylvania brand, so the pair should be rated B Contains A.
Original Listing (A)Potential Duplicate (B)Rating and Explanation
Castle Medical Group 118 Burton Road Ashby-de-la-Zough, LE65 England +44 1530414131Dr P Kirshnamurthy – Castle Medical Group 118 Burton Road Ashby-de-la-Zough, LE65 England +44 1530414131A Contains B
The Castle Medical Group is a medical clinic and Dr Kirshnamurthy is a doctor affiliated with that medical clinic. These are considered individual entities, where the medical clinic contains the doctor’s office.

2.3.2. Physical Containment

Physical containment occurs when one POI is located physically inside the other POI, such that the POIs share the same rooftop and a common access point. Shops within a mall building, or a restaurant within a hotel building, are examples of POIs that are physically contained within a larger POI.

Original Listing (A)Potential Duplicate (B)Rating and Explanation
Grand Central Terminal 89 E 42nd Street New York, NY 10017L’Occitane 89 E 42nd Street New York, NY 10017A Contains B
This pair should not be considered duplicates because it is evident from the name that the potential duplicate provides a different service than the original POI. However, the store, L’Occitane, is physically contained within the Grand Central Terminal POI and you can only access L’Occitane by entering Grand Central Terminal.
Grand Central Terminal – Track 111 89 E 42nd Street New York, NY 10017Grand Central Terminal 89 E 42nd Street New York, NY 10017B Contains A
The train track inside a train station is a different entity than the train station, so there is no duplication. Instead, there is a physical containment relationship, where B Contains A.
Shake Shack 89 E 42nd Street New York, NY 10017Oyster Bar & Restaurant 89 E 42nd Street New York, NY 10017No Duplicates and No Containment
Though both restaurants are within the same POI building (Grand Central Terminal), the restaurants are not located within each other, nor are they duplicates of each other. Each listing is a unique listing for a restaurant.

2.3.3. Multiple Rooftop POIs

Some POIs will span entire campuses or business complexes, meaning that there are multiple buildings and addresses associated with, or owned by, the POI. Examples of Multiple Rooftop POIs include, but are not limited to:

  • shopping plazas
  • universities
  • hospitals
  • open-air amusement parks
  • apartment complexes

Consider all addresses that belong to the larger entity as referring to the same Multiple Rooftop POI when the listings are paired with the larger entity’s name. For example, universities may have multiple departments and buildings, but each of these is associated with, and belongs to, the university. Therefore, if two universityassociated addresses are both listed with the university name, these should be rated as Duplicates. This concept applies to all Multiple Rooftop POIs.

Original Listing (A)Potential Duplicate (B)Rating and Explanation
University of Pennsylvania 1 College Hall Philadelphia, PA 19104University of Pennsylvania 3733 Spruce Street Philadelphia, PA 19104Duplicates
Both listings match the POI name, University of Pennsylvania and research reveals that the addresses are for different buildings on the university campus. These listings are Duplicates because both addresses are located on the same campus and the POIs are both listed under the university’s name.

However, whenever one POI within a Multiple Rooftop POI complex is contained by a larger, parent POI, then the POIs have a Containment relationship. First determine if there is a brand or physical relationship, then determine which is the larger, parent POI and rate the pair as having a Containment relationship.

Original Listing (A)Potential Duplicate (B)Rating and Explanation
Disneyland Park 1313 Disneyland Drive Anaheim, CA 92802Matterhorn Bobsleds 1313 Disneyland Drive Anaheim, CA 92802A Contains B
The Matterhorn Bobsleds are a popular attraction within Disneyland Park. Both entities exist at the same location but the Matterhorn Bobsleds are located within the Disneyland Park property.

2.3.4. Co-Located POIs

Different POIs that belong to the same parent entity, but do not have a specific parent-child brand or physical relationship, are not duplicates and do not have a containment relationship.  This occurs when two distinct POIs are co-located under the same parent brand or rooftop. Rather than having a parent-child relationship, the two POIs may have a sibling relationship that prevents one from containing the other. The following example illustrates this point:

Original Listing (A)Potential Duplicate (B)Rating and Explanation
School of Biological Sciences Norwich, EnglandSchool of Environmental Sciences Norwich, EnglandNot Duplicates and No Containment
Both listings are for academic departments contained by the same parent entity, the University of East Anglia. However, both are unique entities providing distinct functions. As a result, neither POI can contain the other, either physically or by brand.

2.3.5. POIs Within POIs: Amenities

Amenities are a type of POI that are often contained within a larger POI, either by brand or physical containment. Amenities offer features or services for the convenience of guests, but may not represent a place where a person would conduct a transaction or even necessarily interact with another person. Amenities may include, but are not limited to:

  • restrooms
  • elevators
  • water fountains
  • seating or dining areas
  • private fitness centers

Not all POIs or POI amenities are open and accessible to the public. However, POIs and amenities that restrict access from the general public should be rated without consideration to limitations on public access. If a larger POI, that is not open to the general public, contains a smaller POI, the smaller POI should be defined as being contained by the larger POI. Even though the general public cannot access the smaller POI without first having access to the larger POI, the pair is still considered to have a Containment Relationship.

Original Listing (A)Potential Duplicate (B)Rating and Explanation
Disney World Lake Buena Vista, FL 32830 +14079395277Disney’s Grand Floridian Marina Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort 4401 Floridian Way Orlando, FL 32830 +14078242978A Contains B
The Grand Floridian Marina is a guest amenity within Disney World and the Grand Floridian Marina is contained by the Disney World brand, so A Contains B. Even something as minor as a public restroom within Disney World would be considered to have a Brand Containment relationship.
Cabin Creek Apartments 1233 Gaskins Road Henrico, VA 23238 +18047401800Cabin Creek Apartments Pool and Workout Room 1233 Gaskins Road Henrico, VA 23238 +18047401800A Contains B
Cabin Creeks Apartments is a nonpublically accessible residential complex. Although users would not likely have access to the Pool and Workout Room, we still consider whether or not these are Duplicates. In this case, the Pool and Workout Room are contained by the parent POI, Cabin Creeks Apartments, so A Contains B.

2.3.6. POI Name Changes and Service-Level Mismatches

Businesses that undergo a change of ownership, or parent companies where the POI name is changed, are not considered Duplicates. If the POI pair refers to the same location, but includes substantial name differences between the listings, the pair should be rated as No Duplicates and No Containment.

POIs with name changes do not have a containment relationship because the listings represent a change of ownership and are considered to be separate listings. A substantial difference in POI names may also indicate a difference in the type of service, or level of service, offered by a POI. If different services are provided by each POI, the listings should be treated as though the POIs were separate entities, where one listing closed and the other listing took its place.

Differences between POI Names may indicate different types or levels of service.

Conduct research in these cases to understand any potential change in ownership or type/level of service.

Original Listing (A)Potential Duplicate (B)Rating and Explanation
Clark Tire 327 S Polk St Pineville, NC 28134 +17048894055Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co 327 S Polk St Pineville, NC 28134 +17048894055No Duplicates and No Containment
The matching address and phone number indicate that these listings refer to the same location. However, the difference in names, Goodyear and Clark Tire, are two distinct companies. It is likely that the business was at one point operated by Goodyear but is now operated by Clark Tire.
Cinemark Hollywood Movies 20 2101 E Beltway 8 Pasadena, TX 77503 +17134758180Cinemark Hollywood Movies 16 2101 E Beltway 8 Pasadena, TX 77503 +17134758180No Duplicates and No Containment
The change in POI names suggests that this Cinemark location was upgraded from 16 screens to 20 screens.  Since the difference here is purely a name change for a POI in the same location, there is no containment relationship. However, this does represent a servicelevel change, so the pair should be rated No duplicates and no containment.
AMC Dine-In Kabuki 8 1881 Post Street San Francisco, CA 94115 +14153463243AMC Kabuki 8 1881 Post Street San Francisco, CA 94115 +14153463243No Duplicates and No Containment
AMC “Dine-In” theaters offer an expanded menu with in-theater table delivery, as well as premium seating and amenities. The “Dine-In” branding indicates a substantially increased level of service and should not be considered a duplicate.
Cinemark Hollywood Movies 20 2101 E Beltway 8 Pasadena, TX 77503 +17134758180Cinemark Movies 20 2101 E Beltway 8 Pasadena, TX 77503 +17134758180Duplicates
The lack of “Hollywood” provides no meaningful difference to a user. The “Hollywood” branding in this case does not imply anything specific about the level of service in the theater, so this pair should be rated as Duplicates. Research will often be required to confirm the level of service associated with branded experiences.
Original Listing (A)Potential Duplicate (B)Rating and Explanation
Walmart Supercenter 2100 88th St North Bergen, NJ 07047 +12017582810Walmart Neighborhood Market 2100 88th St North Bergen, NJ 07047 +12017582810No Duplicates and No Containment
While these two POIs point to the same address and phone number, Walmart Neighborhood Markets and Walmart Supercenters provide different services. Walmart Supercenters have extensive retail sections, while Walmart Neighborhood Markets specialize in groceries. The name differences indicate a service-level difference. There is also no containment relationship because one listing is not a parent entity of the other. These listings should be treated as if one listing has closed and the other has replaced it.

2.3.7. POIs with Multiple Entities

Some POI names may include more than one entity. A hotel may have restaurants, spas and shops at their locations and these may be reflected in a POI name. For example, Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa is known as a Casino, a Resort Hotel, and a Resort Spa, but it may be known by variations of its name that emphasize one or more of these entities (e.g. Red Rock Casino, Red Rock Resort and Spa, Red Rock Hotel, etc.). In cases where both POI listings include a common entity, it will be necessary to determine the relationship of the entities to the POI with Multiple Entities.

If a POI listing combines entities, the pair should be rated as Duplicates when the larger, or dominant, entity from one listing matches the entity in the other POI with Multiple Entities listing. However, if a POI listing with multiple entities is matched against one of the smaller entities in the POI with Multiple Entities listing, then the pair should be rated as having a Containment relationship, where the larger entity contains the smaller entity. The following examples illustrate this point:

Original Listing (A)Potential Duplicate (B)Rating and Explanation
Carlyle Hotel and Restaurant 35 E 76th Street New York, NY 10021Carlyle Hotel 35 E 76th Street New York, NY 10021Duplicates
The Carlyle Hotel is a hotel in New York City. While the POI names are different, the other listing information is the same. Research indicates that both entities exist at the same location and that the Hotel is the dominant entity. Since both POIs refer to the hotel, this pair should be rated Duplicates.
Original Listing (A)Potential Duplicate (B)Rating and Explanation
Carlyle Hotel and Restaurant 35 E 76th Street New York, NY 10021Restaurant at the Carlyle Hotel 35 E 76th Street New York, NY 10021A Contains B
Unlike the previous example, the Potential Duplicate refers to the restaurant. While the restaurant may be well-known, it is the smaller of the two entities (hotel or restaurant) indicated in the Original Listing. In this case the larger entity, the hotel, contains the smaller entity, the restaurant. As always, pay attention to changes in name, as these will often indicate changes in type and level of service. Research, however, may be required to determine which of the services is more dominant.
Restaurant at the Carlyle Hotel 35 E 76th Street New York, NY 10021Carlyle Hotel 35 E 76th Street New York, NY 10021B Contains A
The Original Listing is now for the restaurant at the Carlyle Hotel. Research has established that the larger, or more dominant, entity is the hotel, so the pair should be rated B Contains A.

2.3.8. Transit Containment Exception

Transit POI listings for different transit systems (e.g. light rail, subway, bus system) do not have containment relationships. If multiple transit POIs are within a transit station, the listings for the different transit POIs are not considered to be one system containing the other system. Even if the transit POIs are within the other system’s station, the POIs are considered to be unique entities. This is because the transit systems offer different services, and may potentially be owned by different companies.

Original Listing (A)Potential Duplicate (B)Rating and Explanation
Powell Street Station – BART San Francisco, CAPowell Street Station – MUNI San Francisco, CANo Duplicates and No Containment
The names for these listings refer to different services (BART is a subway service, while MUNI is a light-rail service company); however, both listings refer to the same station. Since the listings are for different services, they are not considered duplicates and also do not have a containment relationship
Original Listing (A)Potential Duplicate (B)Rating and Explanation
Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Arlington, VA 22202 +17034178000Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Metro Station Arlington, VA 22202 +12026377000No Duplicates and No Containment
These two listings refer to two different POIs, indicated by the different names and phone numbers. Although the metro station is physically contained within the airport, the listings offer different transit services, so there is no containment relationship between the two POIs.

Similarly, if the POIs for two transit stops represent unique entities, even if their name and listing information is the same or similar, they should not be considered duplicates or as having a containment relationship. For example, two bus stops that are located on opposites sides of the same street cannot have a containment relationship because they represent unique entities and may offer different services, including traveling in a different direction or serving different routes. Conduct research, including reviewing street imagery, whenever it is necessary to understand the relationship between two transit stops.

Original Listing (A)Potential Duplicate (B)Rating and Explanation
Water & Market Santa Cruz, CA 36.9801,-122.0194Water & Market Santa Cruz, CA 36.9803,-122.0194No Duplicates and No Containment
Research and street imagery reveals that there are two bus stops at this location with the same name. They are across the street from each other and serve different directions (the Original Listing serves the eastbound route and the Potential Duplicate provides service for the westbound route). The bus stops are not duplicates and cannot contain one another.

3. Comments

Please leave comments anytime there is an issue with the POI listings. Comments should include the websites used for research and any information useful for future reviewers.

  • List research URLs used to verify the POIs.
  • Include any other findings and issues observed during the research process.
  • If the correct POI information is not apparent from the rating results, please also mention the correct POI data in the comment box. This is helpful when the results are analyzed and one needs to understand the cause of rating demotions (if any).

3.1. Best Practices

  • Reference Guidelines – If the rating is due to a guidelines intricacy, it is useful to reference the guideline/rule that influenced the decision.
  • Be concise – Don’t write elaborate comments, be specific and efficient with the comments.
  • Comment in English – The comments will sometimes be reviewed or used by those who are not very familiar with the test locale or its language. All comments should be written in English so that they are understandable to the widest possible audience.

4. Duplicates Rating Examples

Original Listing (A)Potential Duplicate (B)Rating and Explanation
Starbucks Coffee 22390 Homestead Rd Cupertino, CA 95014 https:// www.starbucks.com/storelocator/store/8636/Starbucks Coffee 22392 Homestead Rd Cupertino, CA 95014 https://www.starbucks.comDuplicates
Both listings have very similar addresses, with only slightly different street numbers. Further, both have different URL displays, but both belong to the same POI. Research indicates that the listings are pointing to the same POI.
Los Cerritos Elementary School 210 W Orange Av South San Francisco, CA 94080 +16508778700 https://loscerritos-lbusdca.schoolloop.comLos Cerritos Elementary School 210 W Orange Av South San Francisco, CA 94080 +16508778841 https://loscerritos-lbusdca.schoolloop.comDuplicates
Although the phone numbers are different, the other components are exactly the same. Based on the available listing information, both listings refer to the same POI.
U.S. Postal Service 2301 Overholser DR Nicola Park, OK 73020 +18002758777 https://tools.usps.com/ find-location.htm? location=1375099United States Postal Service-USPS 2301 Overholser DR Nicola Park, OK 73020 +14057698813 https://tools.usps.com/findlocation.htm? location=1375099Duplicates
There are differences in the names and phone numbers, but they are minor, and the addresses are exactly the same. The listings refer to the same POI, so the are rated Duplicates.
Budget Rent-a-car 2640 E Indian School Rd Phoenix, AZ 85016 +16029579836 https://www.budget.com/ en/locations/us/az/ phoenix/px1Budget Truck 2640 E Indian School Rd Phoenix, AZ 85016 +16029579836 https://www.budget.com/en/ locations/us/az/phoenix/px1A Contains B
Both POIs provide a similar service (vehicle rental). However, the names indicate that there is a service-level difference, so these POIs are not duplicates. Budget is a well known car rental agency. Research reveals that their truck rental service is only available at certain budget locations. The car rental agency is the parent brand for subsidiary services, so there is a Brand Containment relationship where A Contains B.
Original Listing (A)Potential Duplicate (B)Rating and Explanation
FedEx Office Print & Ship Center 10236 W Broad St Glen Allen, VA 23060 +18043642861 https://local.fedex.com/enus/va/glen-allen/ office-1141FedEx Office Ship Center & Print 10236 W Broad St Glen Allen, VA 23060 +18043642861 https://local.fedex.com/Duplicates
The name of the potential duplicate is probably not correct because FedEx does not use that word order at any of their stores. However, since users would still understand that the listing is providing the same service, the listings are considered Duplicates.
Tsuchiyama Station 1616-2 Nozoe Ishiboshi Harima Kako-gun, Hyogo, JapanTsuchiyama Station restroom 1616-2 Nozoe Ishiboshi Harima Kako-gun, Hyogo, JapanA Contains B
This restroom is potentially noteworthy enough within Tsuchiyama station that a user would search for it. Since the restroom is housed within the Tsuchiyama Station, there is a physical containment relationship and the pair should be rated A Contains B.
Marriott Shadow Ridge Golf Club 9003 Shadow Ridge Road Palm Desert, CA 92211 http:// golfshadowridge.comMarriott Shadow Ridge Golf II – The Enclaves 9003 Shadow Ridge Road Palm Desert, CA 92211 https://www.marriott.com/enus/hotels/ctdst-marriottsshadow-ridge-ii-theenclaves/overview/B Contains A
Though the POIs share an address, their names and URLs indicate that the listings are for separate POIs, so they are not duplicates. According to the official website for the hotel and golf club, the brand and description of Marriott Shadow Ridge indicates that the brand focuses more on the hotel, rather than the golf course. The golf course is therefore contained within the hotel, such that B Contains A.
Walmart 10237 Bay Pines Blvd St Petersburg, FL 33708 https://www.walmart.com/ store/1536-st-petersburgflWalmart Pharmacy 10237 Bay Pines Blvd St Petersburg, FL 33708 https://www.walmart.com/ store/1536-st-petersburg-flA Contains B
These listings are not duplicates because Walmart Pharmacy provides a distinct service from what is provided by Walmart. The Walmart Pharmacy is located inside Walmart, so it should be rated as a containment POI, where A Contains B.
The Carlyle 35 East 76th Street New York, NY 10021 +12127441600 https:// www.rosewoodhotels.com/ en/the-carlyle-new-yorkBemelman’s Bar at The Carlyle 35 East 76th Street New York, NY 10021 +12127441600 https:// www.rosewoodhotels.com/en/ the-carlyle-new-york/dining/ bemelmans-barA Contains B
The Carlyle is a notable hotel in New York City and the potential duplicate is a bar within the hotel that is equally noteworthy, so this pair is not a duplicate. The bar is located inside The Carlyle hotel, so it is considered a physical containment relationship, where A Contains B.
Original Listing (A)Potential Duplicate (B)Rating and Explanation
Scheels 1551 45th St S Fargo, ND 58103 +17012982918 https://www.scheels.com/ store?StoreID=064Scheels Corporate Office 4550 15th Ave S Fargo, ND 58103 +17012323665 https://www.scheels.comB Contains A
While the address, phone number, and pin location differ, both POIs are connected by the Scheels brand. Research reveals that the POIs also share the same building. Since the Potential Duplicate is the corporate office, and brand containment should be considered before physical containment, the rating for these two listings should be B Contains A.
Joe’s Crab Shack 1210 Front Street Sacramento, CA 95814 +19165534249 https:// www.joescrabshack.com/ location/joes-crab-shacksacramento/Captain Crab 1785 Challenge Way Sacramento, CA 95815 +19165501626 http:// captaincrabseafood.com/ locations#140ebbeba8dd-4f8e-9b3f-135b53c46 125No Duplicates and No Containment
These addresses are relatively far apart from each other, and they have distinct names and phone numbers. Listings like this should not require any additional research to confirm that they are not duplicates, nor is one POI contained within the other POI.
Henrico County EMS 1310 E. Washington St Henrico, VA +18045014900Henrico County Fire Department 1310 E. Washington St Henrico, VA +18045014900 https://henrico.us/fire/No Duplicates and No Containment
Emergency Medical Services is a distinctly different service than a Fire Department, so these POIs should not be considered duplicates. The POIs also do not have a parent-child relationship, so there is no containment relationship here.
FedEx Office Print & Ship Center 10236 W Broad St Glen Allen, VA 23060 https://local.fedex.com/enus/va/glen-allen/ office-1141FedEx Office Ship Center 10236 W Broad St Glen Allen, VA 23060No Duplicates and No Containment
A FedEx Ship Center only offers drop-off/pick-up for packages, whereas a FedEx Office Print & Ship Center offers a number of printing/sign making services in addition to shipping. While these listings both refer to the same location, they indicate a service level difference, so they should not be considered duplicates. Research reveals that both POIs exist under the parent FedEx brand, so the POIs cannot have a Brand Containment relationship. Also, there is no FedEx Ship Center within the first POI, so there is also no physical containment.
Original Listing (A)Potential Duplicate (B)Rating and Explanation
Landsowne Walk-In Clinic 1641 Hillside Ave Victoria BC V8T 2C4 Canada https:// lansdownemedicalclinic.co mBurside Family Medical Walk-In Clinic 101 Burnside Rd W Victoria BC V9A 1W4 Canada https://www.burnsideclinic.caNo Duplicates and No Containment
These POIs have distinct locations and names, so they are not duplicates. Also, the POIs do not share the same rooftop and are not under the same POI entity brand, so they are not containment POIs.
Dr Brinkmeier, Dr Kurt, Dr Rabenhorst Markt 4 44137 Dortmund GermanyDr Brinkmeier Markt 4 44137 Dortmund GermanyDuplicates
The first POI lists several names and the second POI lists only one of those names. Both listings share the same location and, because Dr. Brinkmeier appears in both listings, they should be considered Duplicates. If one listing represents multiple persons and the other listing is of a person that is included in the original listing, the pair should be considered Duplicates.
Dr R Cassell – Bosmere Medical Practice Meridian Centre Havant, PO9 EnglandDr C J Kennedy – Bosmere Medical Practice Meridian Centre Havant, PO9 EnglandNo Duplicates and No Containment
Dr Cassell and Dr Kennedy both work in the Bosmere Medical Practice. Because the POI names refer to different doctors, these are not duplicates. They also have no containment relationship because, although they are both located in the Bosmere Medical Practice, neither doctor is the parent entity of the other. Whenever two listings are for different people at a shared company, treat the pair as co-located entities, where there is no duplication or containment.
Daly City Station Daly City, CADaly City BART Station Daly City, CANo Duplicates and No Containment
The Potential Duplicate Listing name is slightly more descriptive than the Original Listing, which can be misleading. However, if we take a look at the pin locations, we see that the Potential Duplicate Listing is for a bus stop near the subway station, but is not contained in the same building entity as the subway. The two listings should therefore be rated No Duplicates and No Containment. The listings are for different services under the same POI entity, but are not considered POIs that contain each other, so there is no containment relationship.
Original Listing (A)Potential Duplicate (B)Rating and Explanation
Starbucks 1574 S Bascom Ave San Jose, CA 95125 +140833770222 https:// www.starbucks.com/storelocator/store/18475/ bascom-square-1574south-bascom-ave-sanjose-ca-951256108-usStarbucks 1696 S Bascom Ave Campbell, CA 95008 +14083716703 https://www.starbucks.com/ store-locator/store/9038/ hamilton-plaza-1696-sbascom-avenue-campbellca-950080606-usNo Duplicates and No Containment
Duplicates can be tricky to identify when businesses have similar locations and names: for instance, a Starbucks right across the street from another Starbucks. Though the street addresses of both POIs are similar, and the locations are close, the listings are referring to two distinct locations. The businesses have different phone numbers as well. This means that the listings are no duplicates.
