1)Introduction.

The following document is a guide that highlights important sections of the POI Guidelines, along with situations that require special attention in the Mexican market. The purpose of this document is to provide helpful information and guidance on common mistakes that have been observed in this market.

2)POI identification.

When rating POI tasks, the first step is to identify the POI that is being evaluated, in order to do this, you should:

1.Copy the coordinates of the POI and paste them into a maps application.
2.Select the “Search nearby” option and type or copy and paste the POI name.
3.Check if any result is returned.

The following is a list of useful map applications that can assist you in your research:

Google maps
Waze
Bing Maps
2)POI Validity.

Research is key. POI validity ratings depend on research and resources available for the POI, as well as local knowledge of the POI’s region.

The validity of the POI should be confirmed with research, and in accordance with sections: 3. POI Validity and 3.1 POI Validity Rating options of the Guidelines. Once the POI has been identified and verified as valid, the next step would be to verify data accuracy using official/reliable sources.

Official/Reliable sources are the following:

Official Website.
Social media sites claimed by the POI and updated within the last 6 months.
Recent (within 1 year) street imagery.
Postal authorities.
Government business registries such as INEGI DENUE

Key reminders:

Always take enough time to review official websites and resources.
Avoid using spammy websites or data aggregators.
Follow the Research workflow diagram available in section 3.3.2 of the GL to determine the correct rating to be assigned to POI’s that may be closed. See diagram below:

3)Temporarily Closed POI’s.

If businesses are temporarily closed due to COVID-19 or any other reasons listed in section 3.2: Temporary Closures, remember to select “Yes-Temporary Closure” if applicable, and leave a comment to justify your ratings.

4)Data accuracy.

Official resources.

According to Section 2.1.3. Official Resources, you may use additional resources to confirm information about a POI that is not available on their official website. This includes updated social media pages, recent street imagery, postal authorities, government registries and/or official government maps.

Scenarios in the Mexican Market:

Some official websites are missing data components like phone numbers or hours. You may use claimed social media pages updated within the last 6 months to confirm any information that the official website does not provide.
Considering the recent health emergency, please review carefully the last posts or announcements made by the business in websites or social media pages, as some businesses might have changed their hours of service, type of service or even phone numbers.

Name.

Name should match the official name of the POI, use street imagery and official websites to verify it. Consider misspellings while you are rating the name.

URL.

To verify the URL, just copy the URL provided and paste it into a browser.

Important notes to consider when rating URL. Section 7.1. URL Rating Options:
Official websites should be prioritised over social media pages.
If the POI does not have an official website, official social media pages that have been updated within the past 6 months, may also be Correct.
However, if a listed URL is the POI’s social media page, but an official website exists, the social media page would be Incorrect. –
Scenarios in the Mexican Market:
Some non-chain local businesses located in small cities/towns will probably have a social media claimed site rather than an official website.
In some cases, it will be easier to find social media claimed sites, however, please take enough time to review if the POI has an official website.

Address.

Address should always be verified using official sources, social media and crowdsourced pages claimed by the business with activity within the last 6 months, or even 2 unofficial sources. Please read the Country Specific Guidelines to validate the correct mandatory components.

Tip: For chain POI’s like Starbucks, Walmart or McDonald’s, use the store locator. For small/local businesses that do not own an official website, the address can be verified via Facebook, Instagram and/or Yelp, those sites are very helpful.

Phone.

To verify the Phone number always use official sources, it is usually listed on their contact/about page. See section 6 of the Guidelines.

Hours.

Hours should be verified using official sources only, these are usually listed on the contact/about section of the official website. Remember that unofficial social media pages, crowdsourced user review sites or SERP’s are not considered as official sources to verify Hours. See section 11 of the guidelines for further information.

Category.

To verify the category, open the category list provided on Tryrating and follow the rules listed on the section 8.1 of the Guidelines:

1.Always choose the best fit category in the category list.
2.Read reviews to help you determine the correct category.
3.When multiple categories equally describe the POI use the business name to decide.
4.Do not rely on categories designed by SERP’s or crowdsourced user review sites.

Pin.

As stated in section 9.5: POIs Within POIs, pin ratings for POI’s Within POI’s will be based on the actual location of the POI, which will be determined by research. Research should be conducted using available resources, which may include, but are not limited to: vector satellite, street imagery (when available), official websites and/or official social media sites, official maps and directories of the Parent POI.

Scenarios in the Mexican Market:
Parent POI’s directories are a good source to determine the precise location of a POI.
Recent street imagery for businesses located in shopping centres/malls are a good source to determine the exact location of the Pin.
If sufficient evidence is not available to determine the POI’s precise location, then the whole rooftop that contains the Child POI becomes Perfect [section 9.5.1 Ratings Based on Available Evidence].

Lastly, please remember to always re-read and refer to the guidelines frequently for a better understanding of the task. Please take a moment to review the Quality Portal where you will find webinars and helpful documents regarding POI Evaluation Tasks.
