It came to our attention that many analysts rate POI Validity based on a consensus from data aggregators, directory sources and similarly unreliable sources. In case official sources are missing, it is always necessary to use reliable sources such as articles in primary publications or crowdsourced user review sites in order to verify the POI Validity. Consensus between unreliable sources should be disregarded.

If no other reliable resources can be found, the most useful resource is the Chamber of Commerce, or Kamer van Koophandel [https://www.kvk.nl]. Businesses in the Netherlands are required to be registered with the Chamber of Commerce. This information can often be used to determine if a business is closed. It can also be used to find out if the POI is a service business, or not a POI. Sometimes the information also includes additional information, such as alternative names, or a website.

1.1 Diligent Research

In the following example, the listing is for a POI called Lasgroep west.

If we were to rely solely on online map resources to research this POI, we would incorrectly infer that that the POI is permanently closed http://bit.ly/2KOS6I2

However, if we conduct thorough online research we will quickly find an official website with recent activity (https://www.lasgroep-west.nl/) This is an active association that isn’t closed at all. It’s also registered with the chamber of commerce (http://bit.ly/2ODxOm4).

The address listed on the official website is a residential address that probably is a mailing address. They do not operate at this location, but they organize events at other locations. This is a POI without a physical location.

It is a common case in the Netherlands that there are many associations registered at residential addresses, so that it is easy to overlook some POIs amongst them, if not enough research is carried out.

Some analysts have rated the above result incorrectly. When you read the POI name, and you check the address in the listing, the first impression is that it is

one of many organizations registered at a residential address.

Please notice that this listing contains a website address, which needs to be checked. Upon verifying data using their official website, we are able to deduce that the street number in the listing is incorrect, as well as the pin coordinates. ^,

The address can be additionally verified in the KvK register.

In addition, the street view shows an office building at the correct address. The logo of the foundation is visible on the information board outside the building. The official website provides directions to this visiting address. The correct POI Validity rating is “Yes”.

The POI listing above may suggest a residential address, the map shows a rural area, and analysts who will not perform further research will rate this result incorrectly. The research shows that there exists a website of a minicamping https://www.decouter.nl/. You can read on this site that this business

belongs to the family Buysse – Vercouteren, the address and the phone number are correct. There is also price list for the next year published. The camping is also visible in the street view. The correct POI Validity rating is “Yes“

According to section 3.1 of the guidelines, listings that are not a POI include individuals or properties that do not conduct business and other properties that don’t represent a POI that users are expected to visit that don’t fit the other ratings.

A common type of non-POI in the Netherlands are holding companies. A holding company is a registered company that owns other companies’ outstanding stock. A holding company usually does not produce goods or services itself and does not represent a POI that someone would visit.

In this example we can already see that the name suggests some kind of administrative function. When we search for the name, we only get unreliable

However, if we look up the business on the Chamber of Commerce website, we can confirm that this is in fact a registered business (http://bit.ly/37yBDBo). We can also see that this is a holding company, which does not meet the criteria for POIs. This listing should be rated No – This is not a POI for POI Validity.

In some cases Analysts use the incorrect rating for businesses without a physical location.

In this example the listing is for some kind of business called Kieresoe. If we look up the business using online map providers we can see that it is listed as an educational consultant at a residential address.

This information is inaccurate. If we do some more research, we quickly find the official website (https://www.kieresoe.nl/). Many analysts rated the business as a service business or even a valid POI, but none of the information on the website suggests that this is correct. The website does not list any address. This is in fact a website with a webshop. According to section 3.1 of the guidelines, this should be rated No – There is no physical location for POI Validity.

Analysts sometime fail to determine when the listing is for a service business operated out of a home. According to section 3.1, a service business is a business registered at a residential address, which typically visits their clients, such as consultants or contractors. For example plumbers, or financial advisors that work from home. Users aren’t expected to visit these businesses.

In this task we can already tell from the name that the business appears to visit their clients. If we look up this business, we only get unreliable aggregator websites.

However, when we look up the business on the Chamber of Commerce website, we can see that this is a registered business (http://bit.ly/2OID3ke). The description also confirms that this is a hairdresser who visits their clients.

If we look up the address in Google Maps, we can also see that the address the business is registered to is a residential (http://bit.ly/33jHGqa). In this case, we can conclude that the result is service business operated out of a home.

If there are no online resources available, often we can’t verify if the result is an existing or closed POI. Is it also true in this example?

The address in the POI listing is not listed on the official ING website, the street view shows an industrial area, where a bank office would not be expected. However, we can check that this business, which was a car lease not a bank office, was written out of the KvK register (http://bit.ly/2VGeiZa).The address matches the address in the POI listings. At this point the pin location can be checked again. It turns out that the pin drops on the incorrect address. Although the street view at the correct address also seems to show nothing, there is the timeline function available, so that we can see that some years ago a car lease location of ING existed at the result address.

Based on the KvK and the old street view, the correct POI Validity rating is “No – Closed”.

Please be aware that analysts often missed categories being too general or too specific.
