The purpose of this task is to find out whether there is an active POI at the target address. “Active” means that there is online activity in the last 6 months.
STEP 1: Verify the type of address. Perform a quick map search of the target address. Residential (vs. commercial) properties must meet three criteria in order to be considered a POI. They must:
- have signage,
- post regular hours,
- and be a type of service that
could be performed at the target
address

If the target address is residential anddoes not meet three criterial above, then check “No.” (The task ends)
STEP 2: Research address + hints. Hints are just that, hints. The name and/or
URL hints may not be related to the target address; and even if they are related to the
target address, they may or may not be active. Example:

When we perform a map search of the above address, we find a
commercial property and street
views show Shopko; which matches
the hints provided. But, before weconclude there is an active POI atthis address, we need to performmore research.
STEP 3: Verify actual POI existence. Look for the address on an official website or a managed social media page. In the above case, when we check https://www.shopko.com/locations, we find that the target address is not listed. BUT we don’t stop here. Next, we look for any POI that exists at the target address by performing a general address search. Among the results that return we find this:

A quick search of the target address + “Tractor Supply Co” brings up a link to the official
website for Tractor Supply Co. which has the target address listed.
STEP 4: Verify recent activity (within last 6 months) Check the official
website for a copyright date (most often found at the bottom of the page.) This must be
the current year; or for the first six months of any year (Jan-June 2020, for example) the
copyright could be the year prior (2019).

In this case we find that Tractor Supply Co has a 2020 copyright date and we can conclude that “Yes,” there is an active POI at this address.
NOTE: IF we had not found a recent copyright date, we would have looked for other
recent activity such as:
IP 17
• news/blog postings,
- calendar/sales dates etc.
- social media posts/reviews
- other user reviews as needed.
SEE Guidelines Section 2.1 Research Rules for more detail.
Once we have found recent activity, we complete task by checking the source box and entering the POI URL and name. (See POI @ Address guidelines for details on how which source box to check and how to enter the URL and name.)
KEY POINT REVIEW:
- Carefully check residential address—they are rarely considered POI for this task type. To be considered as POI they must meet strict criteria.
- Start with the URL & Name hints when present—but when they don’t produce an active POI, check for other POIs at the same address.
- To be considered “active,” a POI must have official/reliable activity within the last 6 months; otherwise, even though they may exist, they are not considered active.
