Implicit Location Intent – Viewport – Fresh or Stale?

When determining an Implicit Location intent, it is important to pay attention to whether theviewport is fresh or stale.

Section 2.3.2, Implicit Location – If the user’s location intent is not specifically stated in the query, use the user location, viewport location, and viewport age to determine the area of expected results.

Real-World Locations

Always check for real-world locations using location finders on official websites.

Do not assume that TryRating will return all possible results. What may appear to be the closest result in TryRating, may not be the nearest location in the real-world!

Some results may auto-populate in search engines and may not reflect current, current real-world locations. Always use official POI websites (location finders) when possible, to find all real-world locations.

If official websites are not available, then use consensus from multiple map applications and search results.

Result 4: Initially result 4 looks like a useful result for the user, being the 5th closest result. However, after research is done using the Starbucks “Find a store” option, there are many more real-world locations closer to the user that were not returned by Try Rating. As a result of these findings, result 4 should be demoted -3 for distance and rated Bad.

Distance – Relevance

How you rate Relevance for distance will depend on several factors.

Section 5.4, Distance, states that because the user can be offered many possible results that are all very similar, the closest entities providing the expected service can be consider the best options. Results that are farther away are less relevant and should be demoted according to their additional distance.
Defining what is close and what is far depends on the context of each individual query:

Factors Affecting Distance Include:

^Number of possible results in the real world – When there are many possible results, relevant results will likely be quite close to the location intent. When there are fewer possible results, relevant results will be much further from the location intent and still be considered helpful.
^Distribution of all possible results – Sometimes there may be one result that is very close to location intent (Excellent), and then a group of 2+ results that are a similar distance away and the next closest results. In that case those locations may all be grouped together in the next rating group (Good). In other cases, there may only be 1 result that is the next closest and only that location would receive a rating of Good.
^Population density (rural, urban, or suburban) – Often users in rural areas are used to traveling longer distances to reach services. Useful results are likely to be located further away in rural areas than they are in urban areas, where users expect results that are closer to them.

 

Distance – Relevance

Fresh Viewport, User Located Outside of the Viewport:

When the user is outside the fresh viewport , the fresh viewport should be used as the location intent. All ratings should be based on the fresh viewport’s location and any results within the fresh viewport receive no demotion for distance.

Do not demote a result for distance when:

It is the closest possible result, even if it is far away from the area of expected results.
Other. Closer results are found to be closed or nonexistent.

Demote a result for distance when:

Other results that satisfy the query and provide the same or similar service are closer

 

 

 

Lack of Connection

A result needs to have some type of relationship to the query and the user intent.

Section 5.1.8, Lack of ConnectionIf a result does not satisfy the user intent because the connection between the query intent and the result is not immediately obvious or helpful to the user, rate the relevance Bad.

When a query for a chain business includes a location modifier, it is important to understand what type of location modifier it is and all real-world potential results prior to rating.

   Transit Queries

How you rate results for transit queries depends on details about the specific query.

When there is a query for a specific station with a unique name that is not the same name as the locality where the station is found, other results will not be useful to the user and are rated Bad.

However, when there is a query for a station that is the same name as a locality, results in nearby localities that are of the same transit type (train, subway, light rail, etc.) may be useful to the user.

Section 5.16.1, Transit Queries – Generally the fewer results that satisfy the user intent, the farther away the results can be and still be considered relevant. The more results available, the closer they need to be.

Closed/Does Not Exist

Always make sure that a result POI/Business exists and is not closed.

Some results may auto-populate in search engines that may not reflect current, up to date real-world locations.

Use official POI websites to verify that a POI exists.

If official resources are not available, use consensus from multiple other sources.

Section 4.2, Business/POI is Closed or Does not Exist: Use the Business/POI is Closed or Does not Exist checkbox when, after research, it is determined the result Business/POI is Closed/non-existent, is randomly moving, or is a non-recurring past event.

Do not use this checkbox for an Address Result and that address does not exist (See Section 7.2, Address Does Not Exist, for information on how to rate Addresses that do not exist.)

When you use this checkbox, remember that you must still provide a Relevance rating as if the place were open or did exist.

Result Address Does Not Exist

When the result is an Address result, always make sure to verify that the address exists using resources such as official POI/Business websites, official postal services websites, or consensus from multiple other sources.

Query Address Does Not Exist

When the query address does not exist, TryRating will return 1 of 3 possible Address results, and it is important to understand how to rate each result type.

Section 10.3, Query Address Does Not Exist – Sometimes research will show that a full query address does not exist.

In cases like this, there can be three types of results returned:

Name – Small Details

Always make sure to check the name of the POI closely for missing letters, punctuation issues, and minor misspellings.

Classification – Incorrect

Always make sure to check the classification of the result and evaluate the accuracy in order to

determine the final Name rating.

A category is considered Correct even when it includes a broad or alternate categorization that is not a preferred choice but is not misleading.

Address Components– Small Details

Always make pay attention to small details in the returned address and verify the entire address

with the official website and postal service to ensure all components are accurate.

Section 7.1, Address Components – Street number, street name & direction, unit, locality, postal code.

S Cardinal Directions are very important (N,S,E,W)

S Sometimes the postal service will accept several locality names for a postal code

S Slight variations in street number and postal code should be verified

If the returned address in Try Rating is different than the official website, always check the postal service

to verify what is correct.

We can accept a returned address that matches the official website or the postal service as Correct.
If the returned address does not match either of these, it is considered Incorrect.

Address Components– Small Details

Pin Accuracy

1.Always verify the correct pin location using a combination of satellite imagery, street view, POI, maps, and multiple map providers. This can make a big impact on rating.

Section 9.1.1, Pin Resources – Rate pin placement according to consensus from multiple reliable online resources. Whenever possible, make sure the pin is falling on the correct portion of the rooftop.

2.When the pin falls on a neighboring rooftop, it is important to distinguish between an Approximate rating versus a Next-Door Rating.

^ 9.2 Single Rooftop – Approximate – Pin falls within the boundaries of the property, including on any rooftop or section of rooftop that’s not the intended one.
