The objective of this task is to evaluate the accuracy of addresses. Below are the steps to follow when rating Address Verification tasks:
center latitude and longitude for the query address.
If the query address is either Valid or Invalid but Reasonable evaluate the response address accuracy.
If the query address is Invalid and Not Reasonable: No further rating is required and leave a comment.
In Address Verification, pin and address accuracy are rated only if a query address has been rated Valid or Invalid but Reasonable. The response address is rated based on how accurately it reflects the query address.
Decide if the query address is Valid or Invalid
The query address validity is rated before the response address. As seen in the image on the right, you will be presented with a query address and one or more responses to that query address. You don’t need to look at the response address to rate the query address.
A Valid query address is:
A query address that does not meet any one of these conditions is Invalid.
POI and AOI names are not considered address components and should be ignored. More exceptions can be found in section 3.2.
A detailed list of Valid and Invalid query address examples can be found in sections 3.3 and 3.4.

Query formatting does not affect validity. The queries are real queries submitted by users. They may contain issues such as misspellings, missing components, POI names and bad formation. A query that satisfies all of the conditions above is Valid even if it has formatting issues.
Decide if an Invalid query address is Reasonable
An address is considered Invalid but Reasonable if it exists in the real world and is at least one of:
• An area on one side of the street that is equal to or smaller than a block
• A small area that can not be broken down any further in terms of address components.
• A plaza or plaza-like feature
• A residential complex that is equal to or smaller than two blocks in size
• An address/postal code that defines a small area that is within eyesight
-Trees are not considered visual obstructions
-If in doubt between a block and within eyesight, choose the most generous of the two
You can find multiple examples of Reasonable and Unreasonable addresses in section 4 of the guidelines.
Provide Latitude and Longitude for Valid or Invalid but Reasonable query addresses
In Address Verification tasks, pin coordinates will reflect the query address, rather than the result address.
When rating a query address as Valid or Invalid but Reasonable you must include its latitude/longitude:
- When the target location is a single building/rooftop, the latitude and the longitude should be for the center of that rooftop.
- When the target location is an area with multiple buildings (for example a plaza, campus, or small area with multiple buildings), the latitude and longitude should be the center of the area.
Section 5 of the guidelines has detailed information about providing the latitude and longitude.
The latitude/longitude coordinates you enter in the tool must contain at least four digits after the decimal point.
Rate the Pin Accuracy for Valid or Invalid but Reasonable query addresses
Every query that returns a response address will show a pin on the map. You will rate the accuracy of each pin’s placement in relation to the query
address using this scale:
Perfect
Approximate
Next Door
Wrong
Can’t Verify
Some result types are eligible for fewer possible ratings in the rating scale.

The location of the pin should reflect the query address. This differs from the Maps Search task, where the pin is related to the result address.
Rate the Response Address for Valid or Invalid but Reasonable query addresses
A correct response address will refer to the same unique location as the query address and will be complete and well-formatted. If any portion(s) of
the response address is missing or incorrect, use the appropriate rating
The response address can be:
• Can’t Verify
If an address is Invalid but Reasonable, you must also judge the response address. A Reasonable response address should be a standard address for the query locale and include the same number of components as the query address. Any extra components must be correct. If not, they should be rated with the appropriate Incorrect rating.
If you are asked to rate the response address accuracy for an Invalid and Unreasonable query address, rate Can’t Verify.

Query Address & Reasonable Address
The query address in this task includes a POI name – Sinclair Community College. Per section 3.2. POI names are not considered address components and should be ignored. Similar to the Bowling Green University example in section 3.4. removing the POI names leaves the address Dayton, OH, which is an Invalid query address, as it does not indicate a single location.
Per section 4 the remaining address, Dayton, OH, refers to an entire locality, which is not small enough to be considered Reasonable under any of the criteria.
Query Address & Reasonable Address
The query address refers to two separate buildings containing multiple businesses, each with its own unique unit number. Since the address is missing the unit number needed to be able to identify one rooftop, the query address is Invalid per Section 3 of the guidelines. In order to be a unique address, the query would need to include a unit number.
Per section 4 the query address is Reasonable because it refers to a small plaza-like feature with only 2 rooftops.
Pin Accuracy
The query address is Valid per section 3 of the guidelines it is unambiguous and real. The query address includes a unit number. Per
sections 1 and 6, if the query address is Valid or Invalid but Reasonable, you will evaluate pin accuracy (in relation to the query address).
The address is under a rooftop that’s one of several rooftops sharing a single street number and containing multiple unit numbers. With street imagery, the exact location of the address can be confirmed. The pin falls on a different rooftop within the same complex. The pin is rated Perfect per section 6.2.
Pin Accuracy
The query address is Valid. Per section 3, the query address points to a single building that contains units. No unit number is needed
in the address to differentiate this building from another since the address points to only one building. Per sections 1 and 6, if the query address is Valid or Invalid but Reasonable, you will evaluate pin accuracy (in relation to the query address).
The pin falls on the property’s parking lot and should be rated Approximate per section 6.2. It falls within the boundaries of the property.
Pin Accuracy
The query address is Valid – it points to the ProHealth Waukesha Memorial Hospital-Mukwonago. Per sections 1 and 6, if the query
address is Valid or Invalid but Reasonable, you will evaluate pin accuracy (in relation to the query address).
Campus complexes like hospitals and colleges usually have multiple buildings/rooftops (section 6.3.2). This hospital is a single building.
Similar to the Stevens Creek Blvd shopping mall example in section 6.2., the pin is rated Approximate because it falls within the property’s boundaries.
Address Accuracy
The response address is a historical landmark – E. Franck & Co. Mercantile.
Per the USPS, the postal code should
be 96033. Per section 7.3.7. If a response address has a wrong, misspelled, or missing postal code and
no longer refers to the same unique location as the query address, rate
Address Accuracy as Incorrect – Postal Code.
In Conclusion
Always leave a comment explaining the reason for your ratings. The comment should include the reason for your ratings, along with which Guidelines principles the address meets or violates.
Leave detailed comments and links to sources (when applicable) if you feel the reason for your ratings may not be obvious, if the rating was difficult to complete, or if an unusual amount of research was required to make the rating.
Final Tips:
Look for unit numbers, which are often needed to identify one specific rooftop for cases where one address refers to multiple buildings.
PO Boxes will always be rated as Invalid since they lack maps intent.
