Confirm Data Accuracy: Best Practices – Chile (es_CL)

Research requires in first place to find an official source that allow us to verify its data. If it does not exist, at least three unofficial sources in agreement with each other.

Unreliable sources should not be considered for verifying.

Use official resources like businesses’ official websites, national postal service websites, and government websites whenever possible (Search Guidelines, section 2.1.1)

For Business/POI Results, research for Name Accuracy. We should find an accurate source that allow us to verify if it is Correct, Incorrect or Partially Correct. If we don’t find

any accurate source, we should rate Name, Address and Pin as Can’t Verify. (Guidelines, 4.2)

For schools, that don’t have an official website, we can use the official Education Ministry school directory, that is updated and includes all details of public and private schools. http://www.mime.mineduc.cl/

For businesses within a mall, sometimes it is more useful to move directly to the website of the shopping mall (for example: Mallplaza.cl, Parquearauco.cl ….)

Remember for Address Results, Name Accuracy should be rated as N/A (Search Guidelines, 6.1)

For researching for Address Accuracy, check the CSG that all components of address components required for the result are present and correct

(See es_CL Country Specific Guidelines to see required components for every kind of result)

Below are some of the resources that Analysts from Chile (es_CL) market have reported to be helpful when performing research:

Helpful Map Applications, ordered by importance:

1.Google Maps. Helpful for most of the Chilean and worldwide localities
2.Bing Maps. Helpful for most of the Chilean and worldwide localities
3.OpenStreetMap. As a third option. It has more accurate and updated information on rural localities and placed not covered by Google Maps and Bing Maps.
4.HERE WeGo Maps. It also has more updated vector mappings for rural localities and small cities. This is the mapping system used by Facebook for its business pages.

Helpful resources to research Name Accuracy

1.Official Company/Business Websites. The primary and most reliable source.
2.Official Facebook Pages. We must check that that page really belongs to its business. That page must include updated information and updated posts and comments. It should be a Business Page for being measured as an accurate source.

This is an example of a Facebook Page that it’s reliable and could allow us to verify the name and address of a business. It has a nickname along the main URL https://www.facebook.com/ Also, it does have a ticket along its business name that proves that Facebook has verified and checked this page. And it has updated comments and posts. The ticket and clean URLs are not mandatory, but we should verify anytime that this Business page really belong to its business.

3.Official Applications. Some larger business chains (e.g. McDonald’s, Burger King) have official apps that also include a list of its branches.
4.Twitter and Instagram profiles. Only if we verify that it really belongs to the business and it has updated publications.
5.Booking.com. Used for updated hotels that we verify they accept reservations through this portal and only if does not have an official website as primary source. Also used for small hostels and residenciales.

Resources that should mostly avoid for research Name Accuracy:

1.Zomato.com. If restaurant does have updated comments, and does not have an official website, anyway should be compared with another two sources, as this is not an official source.
2.TripAdvisor, same situation that with Zomato.com
3.Foursquare/Swarm. Pages has been completed for users and is not clear its accuracy.
4.Business Aggregators. It does not have accurate information about businesses and are completed automatically by a server without being verified by humans. Its managers also did not make it responsible for the accuracy of its contents. Examples includes the following:

Civico.com, Yelp.com, Yelp.cl, Amarillas.cl, Cylex.cl, Mercantil.com,

Amarillas.emol.com, empresasenchile.cl, laguiachile.cl, 2Gis.cl business profiles.

Here are some examples of Business aggregators. The information present in pages like those are not verified and are mostly completed by a computer, and are not useful for our research and we can’t use them for verify Name Accuracy and Address Accuracy.

5. Business profiles featured in Google Results Page. See next picture for example:

This is an Example of a Google results page for some restaurant. Check the column at the right of this page. The information of that column is not verified, and we could not use for check Name nor Address. If the button of Website does deliver to its official Website of Facebook Page, that we could use for verifying Address and Name.

6. Unverified/Unofficial Facebook Pages: See next picture for example:

Facebook now indicates when a Page has not been verified and has been created by its users. Usually its URL does start with https://www.facebook.com/page/ the name of the business and some random numbers at the end. This is not a reliable source and it does not allow us to verify Name and Address.

1.And for hotels: Booking.com pages for rooms in private residential buildings sold as hostels are not reliable sources, although it does allow reservation through its page.

Helpful resources to research Address Accuracy, ordered by importance:

2.Official Website and Official Social Media pages. The first step, always.
3.CorreosChile website. For verifying Postal Code, at http://www.correos.cl
4.For the default postal code of Chilean communes there is a complete list at: https://codigopostal-chile.com/

Helpful resources to research Pin Accuracy, ordered by importance:

1.Most Mapping Applications: Google Maps, Bing Maps, OpenStreetMap, HERE WeGo Maps.
2.Google Street View, for precise research for pin location.
3.2gis.cl. It has a detailed vector view for verifying pin location including at which address number belongs every building in every corner. This is only useful for Greater Santiago, it does not have maps for any other Chilean city. And its information is not completely accurate, it should be compared with another sources to get an accurate and complete research.

2gis.cl includes a more detailed vector view including the address for each building. This is useful to verify Pin Accuracy, but it only has information for the Greater Santiago area, and its information should be verified with another map applications.
