Address Verification General Tips:
Key Differences Between AV and Search
Address | Pin | |
Address Verification | Rate the response Address in relation to the query address | Rate the response Pin in relation to the query address |
Search | Rate the result Address independently with the query | Rate the result Pin independently with the query |
Addresses Not Existing in Real World
Per GL section 3:
You’ll rate the query address validity before you rate the response address. You don’t need to look at the response address in order to research and rate the query address.
A Valid query address is:
- Unambiguous: The query address must refer to a single unique location. Even if it does not contain all the address components required in a specific market, the query address must contain enough components to point to a unique location.
- Real: The query must refer to an address that exists in the real world. Use multiple research sources to determine if an address exists. Do not rely on the postal service alone.
Example

By doing research in Hong Kong Post website: https://webapp.hongkongpost.hk/correct_addr essing/index.jsp?lang=zh_TW We could conclude that the query address doesn’t exist in the real world. So, the query address is invalid. | ![]() |
Invalid and Reasonable Address
Per GL section 4:
All query addresses that have been rated Invalid should be analyzed to see if they are Reasonable
For an address to be rated as Reasonable, it must refer to a location that exists in the real world and be at least one of :
• A small area that has at most five rooftops and is on one side of a block
m
- An area on one side of the street that is equal to or smaller than a block
- A small area that cannot be broken down any further in terms of address components
- A plaza-like feature
- A residential complex that is equal to or smaller than two blocks in size
- An address / postal code that defines a small area that is within eyesight
Example

The query address is for an entire street, so it is Invalid. The street is short and within the eyesight, so the query address is Reasonable | ![]() |
Invalid and Not Reasonable Address

The query address is for an entire street, so it is Invalid. The street is longer than one block and not fully within the eyesight, so the query address is NOT Reasonable | ![]() |
Address Components
Per CSGL (Country Specific Rating Guidelines) section 2. Sub-district is an essential component for most of the result type, while the district is an optional component.
Please use Hong Kong Post website https://webapp.hongkongpost.hk/correct_addressing/index.jsplang=zh_TW to verify the sub-locality of the POI.

Address Accuracy Example

As a result, the address above will be rated Incorrect – Sub-Locality and Country Specific Issue.
Note: Any address component returned has to be verified to be accurate even if it is optional by defaul
Building Name in Query Address
In Hong Kong, building names are considered valid address components.
Per CSGL 3.7.1.2 If the query address’s street name / number and building name are not consistent, and
that the query address has an ambiguous location intent, the query address should be indicated as Invalid – Not reasonable
Per CSGL 3.7.3 When a query address contains a building name/unit number and the response address
does not:- Rate Correct if the query address is valid even without a building name/unit number – Rate Incorrect – Country specific (building name) or Incorrect – Unit/Apt (unit number) if the query address is invalid without a building name/unit number
If a query address does not contain building name / unit number but the response address does, rate the
response address Incorrect – building name and/or Incorrect – Unit/Apt, the respective component(s)
that was additional.
Example

The response address missing sub locality 沙田 and building name 愉翠苑A座愉歡 閣.
On its own, 牛皮沙街 6號 would have been Invalid – Reasonable as it leads to
multiple buildings. However, the presence of the building name,愉翠苑A座愉歡閣in
the query, makes the address Valid.
Since the query is only Valid with the building name, the building name is a
necessary address component for the result address.
Example

Per CSGL 3.7.3 When a query address contains a building name/unit number and the response address does not: -Rate Correct if the query address is valid even without a building name/unit number
According to the Hong Kong Post, 灣仔 駱克道193號 only belongs to 東超商業中心

Using the map application, we can also verify that the response address directs to the only one building 東超商業中心. Even if the response address is missing the building name 東超商業中 心, the response address still refers to the same unique location as the query address, thus rated Correct.
Pin
Pin Accuracy of the response address is rated based on how accurate the pin placement is in relation to the query address.
The most common mistake observed in Pin Accuracy occurs when the query address is within a housing complex and the Pin drops on the building not exactly at the query address.

Green – Perfect.
The building name and block given in query address indicates a specific building.
Yellow- Approximate.
There are other buildings that share the same street number as the building being searched for. The entire shared parcel, including the other buildings, and its extended boundaries based on Half ’n Half rule is rated as Approximate
The Pin drops on the response address Block 3 but not the query address Block 1, thus the correct rating for the pin is Approximate
