1.Distance & Prominence

.

.

.

At first glance, the suggestion (NTU) is far from the user/viewport, and there are numerous closer possible results including (NTUC Fairprice). However, it is important to consider prominence when rating, in addition to distance.

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is a highly prominent POI, hence it qualifies to be promoted for prominence. It is also a perfect match with the query string, further justifying the user intent.

Therefore, the final Relevance rating for (NTU) is Excellent/Good.

Please refer to GL Sections 2.1 User Query String & 4.3.3 Prominence.

Note: Other closer possible results do not receive extra demotions just because (NTU) is promoted. For instance, Suggestion #4 still receives an Excellent/Good rating because it is one of the closest possible results to the user, but not the closest.

2. Category Query

Query

Query is a category query (Mobile phone). In-depth research is

expected to understand the possible interpretations for this category query. Since (mobile phone) is a broad category, possible results could include mobile phone stores, mobile phone accessories, and mobile

phone repair. (non-exhaustive)

The suggestion (RepairXpress Mobile Phone Repair) is a mobile phone repair store; hence it matches category intent. While the prominence is

prioritized over distance when rating category queries, in this task, the possible results closer to the user, have a similar level of prominence.

Based on the principle of Significant Increase in Distance, the suggestion is within the 2nd closest range of suggestions to the user. (https://is.gd/jgTtDc) (see the next slide)

Therefore, the appropriate Relevance rating is Good.

See GL Section 8.4 Category Query.

3. Service Level / Many Possible Suggestions

Query

The query has an unexpected space and is for (POSB). The query does not specify the service level, i.e. branch or ATM, therefore suggestions for POSB branches and ATMs are equally relevant.

Research shows that there are over 10 closer possible results to the viewport. (https://is.gd/1HD5WO) see the next slide

The suggestion will be demoted for distance, and the appropriate Relevance rating is Bad/Acceptable.

See GL Section 4.3.2 Distance, 4.4 Many Possible Suggestions and

8.3 Chain Business Query.

4.User Intent & Prominence

The query is for (jalan besar) but misspelled. The user is outside the fresh viewport.

All 5 suggestions in this task are possibilities, however we need to consider which results are most likely to be the user intent, as well as their prominence. In this case, Jalan Besar (street) and Jalan Besar (MRT) are the primary user intent. This is not only because they are perfect matches to the query, but because they are also prominent.

The suggestion (Jalan Besar Community Club) has slightly lower prominence compared to the street and MRT station thus should be demoted accordingly. The appropriate Relevance rating is Good.

See GL Section 4.1.1 General Match and 4.3.3 Prominence..

5. Partial Address Query

The query is a partial address (326 serangoon). Research all possible

address that matches in the real world.

Research using Onemap confirms that there are only 2 possible address matches, which coincide with the suggestions in the task, i.e. (326 Serangoon Rd) and (326 Serangoon Ave 3). (https://is.gd/KdilGh) see the next slide

Once the address matches have been determined, they can then be rated according to the distance. Suggestion (326 Serangoon Ave 3) is the closest address match to the user. Therefore, the Relevance rating is Excellent.

See GL Section 8.1.2 Partial Address Query and Mixed Intent.

The query is (Mothe) and is an incomplete query. Research needs to be performed to determine possible result matches.
Suggestion (Motherswork) is one of the closest possible matches to the user/viewport. However, research using official resources confirms that this branch no longer exists. (https://is.gd/EBlLZK)
Closed POIs are rated as if they are still open. Hence, the correct Relevance rating is Excellent.
See GL Section 2.1 User Query String, 3.3.1 No Status Shown and 4.3.2 Distance.

7.User Intent & Explicit Location

The query is for a specific street (Yishun ave 5) and is therefore treated as explicit location intent. VP and the user locations will therefore be ignored.

The suggestion (Healthway Medical – Yishun Ave 5) only matches the query string (Yishun ave 5) on the location modifier part of the POI name, which is nonessential. This should not be considered a match.

Considering the above explanation, Relevance is Bad.

See GL Section 2.3.1 Explicit Location and 4.2 User Intent (holywoo) example.

8.Category Suggestion

The query consists of location modifier (chin swee road) + category

(massage). Therefore, the user is looking for massage-related POIs at Chin Swee Road.

Note that the suggestion (Massages) + location modifier (Chin Swee Rd, Singapore) is a category suggestion. Category suggestions do not appear on the map but are rated accordingly the specific criteria per guidelines.

Since the suggested category (Massages) fully satisfies the query intent and its location modifier matches the query’s location modifier, Relevance is Excellent.

See GL Section 2.2.2 Query and Category Suggestions, 4.13 Query and Category Suggestions and 8.4 Category Query.

.Recap

Conduct research to determine possible interpretations for a broad category query
For location queries, e.g. (Yishun Ave 5), be mindful as to which suggestions are considered a match with the query, and which are not. A suggestion isn’t necessarily a match to the query just because the suggestion’s name contains the queried location
Consider prominence when rating. Prominent results may possibly qualify to have their Relevance promoted.
For category queries, rate suggestions according to the Significant Increase in Distance principle
Category and query suggestions do not appear on the map but are rated according to the specific criteria mentioned in GL Sections 2.2.2 and 4.13. However, do not take category and query suggestions into consideration when demoting other suggestions that appear on the map
When the service level is not specified in the query, all service levels are relevant, e.g. bank branches and ATMs,or supermarkets and hypermarkets
Closed POIs are rated for Relevance as if they are still open.
