Many Results in the real world
When there are many results in the fresh viewport (location intent), the results outside the viewport is rated Bad.
In the example above, the query was “Ramen”. As we can see, there are many results within the fresh viewport. Therefore, the user is not likely to travel further, and the results outside the viewport is rated Bad. We must always check how may real-world results exists near the location intent (within the fresh viewport in this case) before deciding how far we demote the results. Please refer to 5.6 Many Possible Results – Starbuck example (User outside fresh viewport)
Please remember that when the user location is within the fresh viewport, the results within the fresh viewport, We DO NOT demote to Bad. Please refer to the chart below:
Fewer results in the real world
When there are not many results returned, we need to be lenient when demoting by distance.
Above is an example of the query with less results. The query is Starbucks and the location intent is Ichikawa station (the blue pin). Since there aren’t many results around the location intent, the user is most likely willing to travel further. Therefore, we demote results more leniently. Please refer to Zara example under 5.7.
